Constipation is called the mother of diseases. 

The following quick medication induces a bowel movement in a few hours.

Take a fiber supplement
Fiber supplements are readily available & effective at inducing bowel movements if a low-fiber diet is the cause of constipation. Fiber work by adding bulk, or volume, to stool. This helps push stool through the intestines & out of the body.
Some fiber supplements are:
  • Psyllium (Metamucil, Konsyl)
  • Methylcellulose (Citrucel)
  • Calcium polycarbophil (FiberCon)

Eat a high serving of high fiber food
Try these foods that are high in fiber:
  • Fibrous veggies & fruits
  • Rice & beans
  • Oats
  • Whole-grain bread or cereal
Be sure to drink lots of water with these foods, as it will further help push stool through the system.

Drink a glass of water

Proper hydration — typically at least eight-ounce glasses of clear fluid per day — is necessary for normal bowel movements. If you’re constipated & haven’t been drinking a much amount of water, consuming a large glass of water or other clear fluid may trigger a bowel movement

Take a laxative stimulant

These are designed to force a bowel movement by squeezing the intestines. Some popular options are:
  • Bisacodyl (Ducodyl, Correctol, Dulcolax)
  • Senna-sennosides (Senokot)

Take an osmotic

Osmotic laxatives work slightly differently than stimulant laxatives. They’re designed to help move fluids through the colon. Some examples are :

  • Magnesium hydroxide (Phillips syp. Milk of Magnesia)
  • Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX)
  • Magnesium citrate
  • Lactulose (Kristalose, Duphalac)
  • Cream of Magnesia with liquid paraffin (Cremaffin)
With a physician's prescription, you can obtain higher-strength polyethylene glycol, also called PEG (Nulytely, Golytely).

Try a lubricant laxative

Lubricant laxatives such as mineral oil add a slick coat to the intestine’s walls, allowing stool to move through the colon & out of the body more easily. Take mineral oil no more than two hours at bedtime. Expect results within seven to eight hours.

Use a stool softener

One common cause of constipation is dehydration, which can cause hard feces. Using a stool softener, such as docusate calcium (Surfak), docusate sodium (Colace) & moisten the stool by pulling liquid from the intestines. This allows the feces to exit the body more easily.

Try an enema

There are many types of enemas. These work by softening stool enough to produce a bowel movement. 

Some common kinds of enemas are: 
  • Sodium phosphate (Fleet)
  • Soapsuds 
  • Tap water enemas.

Try a suppository

Rectal suppositories such as glycerin or bisacodyl suppository also help encourage bowel movements by softening the feces. 

Get in a squat position to poop

Bring a small footstool in to bathroom the next time you need to poop. Placing feet on a stool in front of the toilet while you poop — so your body is essentially in a squatting position instead of in a seated position —can help you pass feces without straining.

Get some exercise

Light exercise, such as jogging or walking, can encourage bowel movements by increasing blood flow throughout the abdomen.

Try colonic massage

Massaging the colon could help stimulate the bowels.

Chronic constipation can make it challenging for a person to focus on their daily tasks & activities. If your constipation lasts more than a week & doesn’t respond to medication, it’s time to see a physician to rule out serious causes. See a physician right away if constipation is accompanied by dizziness, cramping, fatigue, or spasms.
